Agenda: The Ethical Implications of State-Enforced Cultural Assimilation
The preservation of culture has always been a cornerstone of UNESCO’s mission, yet throughout history that principle has repeatedly come under fire. Across the globe, governments have justified assimilation in the name of unity and national identity, but too often, such policies come at the expense of indigenous and minority communities and their cultures.
In this committee, delegates will confront both the moral and political dimensions of forced cultural assimilation. They will examine where state authority over identity ends and cultural erasure begins, the ethical limitations of national policy, the protection of human rights, and the long-term consequences of assimilation.
