Agenda: Open Agenda
Tehran, 1953.
Iran had witnessed the rise of its first democratically elected Prime Minister, Mohammad Mosaddegh, whose government aimed to reinvigorate national sovereignty, nationalize the oil industry, and champion the interests of the Iranian people.
Western powers, particularly the United Kingdom and United States, grew weary. They feared the loss of control over Iranian oil and the spread of nationalist movements that challenge their strategic interests.
In this committee, delegates will step into the role of operatives, both covert and overt, for the two sides of this conflict: Mosaddegh’s nationalist government and Western forces. They will have to navigate this complex geopolitical situation using strategy and secrecy, as well as debate and negotiate the decisions that will change the course of history. The challenges start within each cabinet, where delegates will have to maneuver conflicting interests, ethical considerations and international oversight.
Can Mosaddegh’s government withstand foreign interference? Can all domestic factions be trusted? Will external powers prevail once again? Ultimately, who will decide the future of Iran?
